Palo Alto Rotary

2017 - 2018

Betsy Bechtel

Rotary: Making a Difference is the Rotary International Theme for 2017-2018, and I look forward to a rewarding new Rotary year.  Together we can make a difference. This is our Club’s 96th year, chartered in May 1922. We are beginning planning for our Centennial year!

We have a growing membership and outstanding programs planned for every week.  In 2016-17, we contributed $140,000 to local and international groups making a difference in people’s lives.  We are the chartering organization and supporters of the Palo Alto Boy Scout Troop 5. We support Cub Scout Pack 6, and are long-time supporters of the Palo Alto Girl Scouts.  We support the Gunn High School Rotary Interact program.  We support low-income community college students with vocational scholarships. We provided grants to ten community non-profits to support their programs.  In addition, we provide Hands On support to local projects. We will continue with these programs. This year also we will be working with Canopy in tree planting as well as supporting a local non-profit.

We support international programs through The Rotary Foundation focusing on eradicating polio throughout the world.  This past year only five cases of live polio occurred in three countries, Nigeria, Pakistan, and Afghanistan. Our club also currently supports projects in Haiti, Cameroon, and Guatemala.

Our annual fundraiser for the Club Annual Charities fund will be a crab feed on March 17th at Mitchell Park Community Center in Palo Alto.  Save the date and plan to attend!  Whether you can attend or not, your support makes a difference in our community giving.

Our weekly meetings allow us a chance to build deeper friendships with fellow Rotarians.  We have outstanding speakers on a range of topics to inform and inspire us.  By belonging to Rotary, we contribute to our communities but we also gain in friendship and knowledge.

It is my honor to serve as President this 2017-2018 year.
